Timothy Cox Will Not Change His Socks

Plot Summary

Timothy Cox Will Not Change His Socks by Robert Kinerk and illustrated by Stephen Gammel was published in 2005.  This book is a picture book with a fantastical story line.  A “good, smart and clean,” Timothy Cox decides one day to not change his socks for an entire month.  As this month progresses, his teachers, friends, family and community members all get involved with his agreement to himself not to change his socks.  The stench is so bad that they order him to obey their requests.  He preservers and does not change his socks for a month despite the pressure from those around him.  Timothy is the main character portrayed in 3rd person that remains undeveloped throughout the story.  He shows no emotion besides determination.

Textual Elements

Artistic Elements

Artistically, the style is impressionistic and captures light and colors in certain ways to portray emotion and movement.  Lines for movement are also used.  The pictures are also angled in different ways and are creatively placed around the text.  This creative placement ties nicely with the fun, rhyming text and its playfulness. The rhyming complex sentences allow for retention and for meaningful learning.

Analysis and Critique

The theme in this story is to trust yourself and follow your dreams even without the support of others.  Throughout history, without a group or an individual doing so, no change would have come.  However, Timothy shows no sign of struggling through adversity.  To make the story more effective and realistic this element would be beneficial.
